NEISD: Two sergeants fired, three other officers disciplined over botched response to Serna Elementary School threat

The North East Independent School District has fired two police sergeants and disciplined three other officers after a botched response to a threat against Serna Elementary School earlier this year.

Sgt. Moses Suarez failed to escalate the threat against the school or timely act upon it through the district’s established procedures after being made aware of it Aug. 28, his termination paperwork states.

Suarez has denied wrongdoing and earlier this month told KSAT the threat was handled like the “hundreds of others” made against the district.

He has filed a grievance with the district challenging his termination.

Sgt. Reyes Bermea was terminated for failing to escalate the threat information or follow up on it while on duty that weekend.

Bermea did not respond to a phone call from KSAT seeking comment.

Sgt. George Teniente, Det. Leticia Sanchez and Officer Michael Luna each received three-day suspensions and reprimands for their roles in the threat response, NEISD officials confirmed Tuesday.

Nathaniel Carrasco, 23, is accused of writing in an AI chat Aug. 11:

  • “I’m getting a gun as soon as I can, and when Serna Elementary starts, I’m just gonna walk in there and start shooting up kids.”
  • “Search up dead school kids bleeding. I will do everything in my power to help create that reality. There shall be no escape, no matter what.”
  • “You don’t get to stop this shooting.”
  • I hope I can get a gun so that way I can just shoot up a (expletive) school already."
  • I truly do mean my threats."
  • “Hopefully soon, I can deliver on a (expletive) threat to school kids.”

SAPD Fusion made district police aware of the threat Aug. 28.

Carrasco was taken into custody the following day on a felony warrant for terroristic threat causing fear to the public.

He remains in jail on the charge as of Tuesday afternoon.
